MUSIC & WHERE TO HEAR IT IN NYC
11.06.2000

New York is the center of the world as far as many are concerned. The Stock Exchange is here and, for better or worse, so are the people that make up the marketing and communications industries. spudWorks also happens to be based here. But in all of this buzz that is NYC, where does one find music, tunes that are soothing to the ears? That's why spudWorks is here, dear readers, to guide you along your path.

Arlene's Grocery is a rock and roll club through and through. Though sometimes prone to the sensitive guy sensibilities that have, for the most part, ruined rock music, you'll hear less of it hear and find more real feeling than in most other clubs. An excellent selection of beers and a diverse bar keeps the listener plastered when the less impressive acts are on stage, but the great soundman keeps the crowd interested when someone worth hearing is up. Located conveniently near the spudWorks headquarters means staffers can frequently be found lurking about. Stanton St, between Orchard and Ludlow.

The Continential Iggy Pop makes this his stop every time he's in town. A punk club with a little bit of history - with pictures on the wall to prove it - makes this place a fun little dive. Cheap drinks and Bass in a bottle are standards, but specials on shots are good things too. Whatever is the latest trend in Rock music is, it seems to be the standard fare here. Rap metal seems to dominate now, but every so often an honest to god punk band can be found and make the $10 or less cover charge worthwhile. On Third Ave, between 8th and 9th st.

The Luna Lounge Sensitive guy rock is the course served every night and eventually it all tastes the same. There are only so many songs you can hear that were written to pick up swooning girls until you just desire a little more guitar. Tragically, for a venue as hip as the Luna Lounge, that almost never happens. Still, at least unlike most other rock clubs, this one has girls in attendance. That still really doesn't make it worth it. Ludlow St, between E. Houston and Stanton.

Smalls Perhaps a never more aptly named club, Smalls is in fact tiny. A little door on the street, and a block long line are the only things that give away the magic inside of this club. Perhaps one of the last remaining places in the city where jazz is played in a way that Miles and Bird would have approved of. Open from 10pm to 6am every night makes it the place to go after an evening of drinking to while away the last of the hours until the sun comes up. Still, it's BYOB, so if you've got it you can drink it. Juice is provided for everyone free however. Usually a $10 cover. 9th St, just past 7th Ave.

There is only one thing that is more enjoyable than drinking, and that's listening to music while drinking. You know it.
