NEW YORK HOT-NOT SPOTS
10.16.2000
Some bars are great all the time. Some bars a great only some of the time. It's well known that nobody could care about constants. They're boring. This week, those bars in New York that are sometimes hot, and sometimes not, will be reviewed for your own drinking pleasure.
Solas A bar on 9th st., between 2nd and 3rd Aves, that is heavy on style. From Monday to Wednesday, this is a great bar to be at. The decor is fantastic and is almost worth the steep drink price. (Even if their Cosmo's are great $7 seems a little pricey.) The Red Room is straight David Lynch that must be experienced. On any other day though, it's packed with Marketing types who, if you were smart, you wouldn't want to speak to. It's when they light up the cigars that the place really goes down in flames.
The Music Box Located on Ave B between 13th and 14th makes the location obscure enough to avoid attracting any Marketing or internet folk for just about all week. Sunday through Thursdays are the prime times to spend a little drinking time with a friend in the posh surroundings. It's even better that there's no sign alerting anyone to it's presence so it has a real club like feel. On the weekends though it's packed and uninteresting. Avoid at all costs.
Luna Lounge If you can deal with the sensitive guy rock, then on the week nights, this is the place to be. A foosball table and Monday night comedy nights are two highlights, and it's even possible a decent band will play. The crowd is a little hipster but the location on Ludlow St., below Houston means that they won't be the staid usual Village crowd. Weekends are bad though. Bad bands. Bad people. Bad bad bad.
Sophie's This place has never heard the word "decor" before, but a $3 Bass can't be argued with. A decent jukebox and a nice smoky atmosphere make the short walk over to 5th St., between Avenues A and B worthwhile. The only time to avoid being around is when a baseball game is on. Unless of course you like sports, but then be sure to carry insurance.
While we're certain that we're going to hear from you that we're biased because all of the bars listed are in the Village, we would like to state that we had a very good reason for doing so. We never leave the Village, but not for lack of trying. We just don't.
