#53 - Jim Baen's Says, 'No'
07.26.2008

The rejections are rolling in hard and fast now, baby. Rejection number fifty-three just came in from Jim Baen's Universe, the first for that particular market. It was not, however, a first for Drug Enforcement, that little tale I keep sending out to everyone and their brother. In fact, that makes nine rejections for this piece and compounds its lead as my most rejected story.

I'm not feeling sorry for it, mind you. It's been rejected as many times as it has because I believe in it. I think it's one of my best. And so, I send it out every time in the hopes that an editor might dig it too.

I do wonder though, whether the almost pro-drug or certainly the anti-drug enforcement message might not rub some people the wrong way. After all, I think there are few people who would actually claim we're winning the so-called "War on Drugs" but just as few people who think the solution might be to leave drugs alone as a legitimate market...

Hmmm....

Anyway, here's a sample of the letter.

Thank you for submitting "Drug Enforcement" to Jim Baen's UNIVERSE. We appreciate your submission, but will not be recommending it to our editors, [name redacted] and [name redacted], for purchase. Please feel free to send us anything else you'd like, though.

Okay, nice as these things go. Most likely a form letter. But what the hell. For my first try at a market, I guess I can't really expect a whole hell of a lot more than that, now can I.

So, with this, I have almost tied my 2007 record for most rejections even though I have already surpassed that year in submissions. Given that I have four still out, this year promises many career records shattered for single season loserdom. The question is, what will the year nine look like?

Stay tuned for more updates from the spudWorks Sports Channel.

Cheers, kids.

MAIL this to a friend. They'll thank you for it later.
