Story Log Thus Far
05.19.2007

As I posted previously, I've already been rejected twenty-two times. I have fourteen completed stories but only seven of which have been submitted. Why? Well... see below where I explain a little about each:

  • Snake In The Grass (2172), 3,000 Words - A nice little story about a sniper holding back invading forces during the revolution. It has never been submitted because outside of the other stories it kind of lacks context. I'm unsure of whether it's a good enough stand alone story so I've held it back. This was the second story I completed.
  • They Who Cast The First Stone (2115), 3,400 Words - Two forced immigrants from Nigera land on Columbus only to find that the people already there aren't all that welcoming. The first story I completed. It's been submitted and rejected five times. I've got eight other places on the list to send it to but that awaits me getting a printer.
  • Defeated (2176), 3,300 Words - A POW story about Earth Soldiers left behind after the Second Republican Defensive. I don't know when I completed this one. It's been submitted and rejected four times. I've put a hold on it while I consider a re-write.
  • You're Never Too Far From Gelassenheit (2158-2161), 9,300 Words - An Amish girl escapes her abusive father on the moon of Gelassenheit and tries to find her way in the Colonies. Basically a novella, it's kind of long for submission and needs a serious re-write or to be scrapped and turned into a novel. I like the main character and it would be worth it but we'll see. Submitted and rejected twice.
  • Iowa State Police (2162), 3,000 Words - Dutch Warner and the crew of The Trout hatch a plan to free their captain. Essentially a caper piece. Fun and short. Third story completed. Submitted three times, rejected twice, waiting for a response on the last submission.
  • The Three Lives of Slugger Joe (2155-2160), 4,700 Words - Slugger Joe is a baseball legend. But news travels back to Earth where Slugger's history waits. I admit it. I wrote a redemption piece. I like it but it could probably use a revision. Still, submitted and rejected three times.
  • Ayla Athena (2174), 4,500 Words - Sevda Behar is forced to be the radio voice of the UUHA. But when the war is over, how will she be viewed by the Republic? Yeah, I ripped off Tokyo Rose but so what? I like this piece a lot. Submitted twice, rejected once, waiting on a response.
  • Liz Carter (2117), 6,800 Words - Liz is the third partner at the Welshman & The Wop, a bar and brothel in Galileo City. She decides to branch out on her own. Her former partners don't react well. This was originally two stories, one called The Welshman & The Wop and the other called Liz Carter but they really were one story to begin with so it ended up at nearly seven thousand words, too long to submit to most places. Also, it's not sci-fi enough for most markets. So... Not submitted but also not rejected.
  • Ivan Boldyrev (2148), 3,700 Words - Mickey Sweeny is the powerful editor at The Galileo Herald and he likes to beat up girls. Ivan doesn't care. That kind of thing doesn't happen at Liz's. The spiritual successor to Liz Carter, Ivan Boldyrev is really an introductory story to a major character for later in the history of the world. Not yet submitted and may not be to a sci-fi market because, like Liz Carter it doesn't have much sci-fi in it.
  • Drug Enforcement (2130), 5,000 Words - A new DEA agent arrives on the drug production world of Shaanxi to stem the flow and causes ripples on a world that thought it was too far away to be bothered. This is probably my best story and really, in my mind, captures what the whole world is about. Submitted and rejected three times. It's on hold until I can get up the courage to get another rejection of this sucker. And for the next market to start accepting submissions again.
  • Dutch (2151), 3,100 Words - The new Kid aboard The Trout earns his place among the crew by ridding them of a problem. An introductory story to the character of Dutch Warner written after I'd done several other Dutch stories because I wanted to explain where he got his name. Recently completed and not yet submitted or rejected yet.
  • Rugged Individualists (2107), 5,100 Words - A story about a man who wants to take his family away from a society he views too restrictive. When they arrive in the colonies, they discover that the opposite has its problems as well. Another story that sums up the point of the series and one that I really like a lot. This too was recently completed and thus has no submissions or rejections.

And that basically sums it up. Fun, isn't it?

MAIL this to a friend. They'll thank you for it later.
